National Nonwovens first launched the XoticFelt® product line three years ago and since has attracted a new generation to high-quality felt.
National Nonwovens, under the name National Felt, originally produced felted wool beginning in 1905 for apparel and wartime products. Later, the company’s WoolFelt® fabric was implemented in the popular poodle skirts of the 1950’s. In the 1980’s, WoolFelt® once again became popular as consumers sought a natural felt for soft sculpture collectibles and holiday projects. Today, National Nonwovens’ trademarked WoolFelt® has emerged as the fabric of choice for heritage quilts, penny rugs, heirloom crafts, and modern decor.
National Nonwovens Introduces Ultra-ProTechtor™ Fire-Blocker
Easthampton, MA – March 7, 2012 – National Nonwovens announces the introduction of Ultra-ProTechtor™, the first fire-blocker for all aircraft seating dress covers. Ultra-ProTechtor™ is a nonwoven lightweight flame barrier utilizing Ultem® polymer and newly-developed Ultem® fibers by Sabic Innovative Plastics.
“Ultra-ProTechtor™ is engineered to provide ultra-flammability protection with superior performance at a lower weight and lower cost,” said Anthony Centofanti, CEO and President at National Nonwovens. “Although it was initially designed for the Aerospace Market, Ultra-ProTechtor™ can also greatly benefit other markets that have modes of transportation requiring fire-blockers.”
The enhanced construction of Ultra-ProTechtor™ provides increased stability along with significant property improvements, including: low smoke density and toxicity, water repellency, low heat release, high puncture resistance, and improved fire-blocking protection at a lighter weight. In addition, it has excellent seam, tear and tensile strength resulting in less stretch and is formaldehyde free. Ultra-ProTechtor™ was also tested and met FAR25-853-A and C amendments 25-116-appendex F part II by two independent US laboratories.
Ultra-ProTechtor™ combines the National Nonwovens advanced engineering with the superior Ultem® fiber technology and the result is material that is inherently more fire-resistant than Aramids. It has a higher Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) rating than either Nomex or Kevlar. LOI is an index that rates the fire-resistance properties according to the minimum concentration of oxygen, expressed as a percentage. The higher the number, the greater resistance of the polymer to support a flame; Ultra-ProTechtor has an LOI of 44 while Nomex has an LOI of 26 and Kevlar has an LOI of 31.

Ultra-ProTechtor™ featuring Ultem® fiber technology
is in the new Willow Tex line of aircraft dress-covers.
The advanced nonwoven material results in products that
weigh less, are more durable, and have a softer feel.

National Nonwovens Introduces Three New XoticFelt® Colors
Pomegranate, Seashell Pink, and Sand Dollar added to bamboo-rayon XoticFelt™ product line.
Easthampton, MA – May 2, 2011 – National Nonwovens, the manufacturer of WoolFelt®, expands its bamboo-rayon product line with the addition of three new XoticFelt® colors. Inspired by hues from tropical paradises, the new 2011 colors are: Pomegranate, Sand Dollar, and Seashell Pink. All the new colors will be on display for the first time May 13-15 during the International Spring Quilt Market in Salt Lake City, Utah.
XoticFelt® is an innovative blend of bamboo-rayon. National Nonwovens is the first manufacturer to utilize bamboo fibers in felt products. Although the bamboo fibers in XoticFelt® originate from a natural raw material, the bamboo fibers are actually considered cellulose or specialty rayon due to the manufacturing process used to turn the bamboo grass or stalks into pulp and then into fiber. Standard rayon fibers originate from wood pulp, which is also a natural raw material. XoticFelt®, made from a blend of specialty-rayon (from bamboo) and rayon, is noticeably softer than other felt products. It also uniquely absorbs dyes for luxuriously rich and vibrant colors.
National Nonwovens first launched its XoticFelt® product line two years ago with eight tropical colors. Because of its amazing soft texture and vibrant hues, XoticFelt® attracted a new generation to high-quality felt. The product line was quickly expanded and now has an impressive total of 23 colors. These new colors are reflective of the increasing demand for this type of felt throughout the industry and its adaptability in many diverse projects.
For over a Century, National Nonwovens continues to be recognized as a leader in the industry for its superior quality textiles. Evolving from traditional felting techniques are National Nonwovens’ innovative technologies that enable the company to produce a variety of quality felt including XoticFelt®. National Nonwovens also continues to offer its popular heirloom quality WoolFelt® in a variety of styles ranging from products with 20% wool content to our 100% virgin felted wool. Complementing this 100% wool product line is the WoolWisp® rovings and ShadedWisps® rovings, which is a natural blend of wool and rayon.

Easthampton, MA – May 14, 2010 – National Nonwovens, the manufacturer of WoolFelt®, expands its bamboo felt product line with the addition of six new XoticFelt™ colors. Inspired by hues from tropical paradises, the new Spring Collection includes colors named: Papaya, Ocean Breeze, Silver Beach, Fuchsia, Pirate Cove, and Cocoa Bean. The XoticFelt™ BAM001 product line now includes 20 vibrant and natural colors.
National Nonwovens was the first manufacturer to introduce a pre-colored bamboo fabric to the market one year ago at Spring Quilt Market 2009. Due to the popularity of this eco-friendly fabric, the product line was quickly expanded at Fall Quilt Market in 2009. This latest collection will be unveiled at the 2010 International Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 21 – 23.
XoticFelt™ is a 100% natural fabric made froma blend of bamboo and rayon. Bamboo fibers are naturally soft, strong and able to retain wonderfully vivid and diverse colors. They are also eco-friendly, making bamboo the ideal green choice for those seeking a renewable, sustainable textile. Bamboo is actually a grass not a tree, making it the fastest growing timber plant on earth. Thriving naturally without pesticides, bamboo has other natural benefits including its antibacterial and antifungal quality called bamboo kun.
Because of the intrinsic characteristics of bamboo fibers to react to changes in its immediate environment, such as humidity, slight hue alterations are a natural response in bamboo fibers when colored. Since National Nonwovens is the only manufacturer of felt in the U. S. with its own dyeing facility and computer-controlled color-matching laboratory, the company is able to control these inherent variations to extremely tight specifications.
